Alcohol is a powerful solvent and allows the active ingredients that aren’t water-soluble to be extracted from the herbs. These include important essential oils, alkaloids, resins active ingredients that aren’t water-soluble, such as essential oils, alkaloids and resins. Since the amount of diluted alcohol ingested is small (only up to 5ml) it is considered negligible and considered safe. If you would like to decrease the amount of alcohol present in the tincture, you can add your dose to boiling water and take it as tea. While this won’t get rid of the alcohol in full, it will allow a good proportion of the alcohol to evaporate.
